9Dragons is based on the strategy games of yore, but with some excellent MMO style mechanics tossed in. What makes it unique is that every class excels at a different role, while not preventing a player from picking up different skills that would allow them to pick up other roles. The basic rotation that most classes use – attack, use a weapon, hit until dead – can be done in-game with a minimum amount of tedious clicking. Dragons can do it in one second.
The pace of combat is geared towards that of an MMO, not a strategy game. While dragons have a decent amount of health, as do all players, they can be injured in a simple 1v1 or 2v2 match, which makes short work of them. The high level player always has the advantage.
It took me a bit of time to get used to the combat, but once it clicks, things go well. Dragons hit incredibly hard, so it’s easy to kill them in 1 or 2 shots if they’re not geared for it. The skills used are deadly effective, and level 1 and 2 are easily mitigated. A dragon player should still be geared for a PvP fight, as the dragons will be in the same bracket as every other player.

Dragons have a health bar that is split into 3 parts, for 1, 2, and 3 health. Attacks, attacks that hit more than 1 part of the dragon’s health bar, are colored yellow. Missed attacks are colored red, so the player can quickly gauge when they’ve gotten a hit in.
Skill rotation is simple, and takes the form of attacking, using a weapon, and repeating the cycle until death. Once a player gets one part of the dragon’s health bar, they can attack the dragon again. Players can change their order of attack by pressing the Q key, which turns that action into a command that’s essentially running the action again with an increased priority.
The combat system itself is well put together, and is easy to pick up.
The best part of the combat system is how it transitions into minigames. The game makes you engage in a minigame in order to get resources and be level higher. The minigame is usually battle royale, and most of them are team based. These minigames all help you level and accumulate resources, and are done well.
