It is a DOS compatible memory area driver that will use memory at the top of the CASSETTE
drive (CASSETTE:AFFS:CACHE) and make it accessible to DOS as the UMA, this UMA area is
default used by the hard disk BIOS (but it is not used by DOS/V) for the initial access.
Its advantage is that the DOS loader is booted from UMA with no need for a hard disk to
boot. UMBPCI basically gives DOS a CASSETTE drive of it’s own, as DOS should not know of
CASSETTE drive (and CASSETTE:AFFS:CACHE), the driver will be the one to care of this CASSETTE
drive (or not), what a nice thing!.
One nice feature of the UMBPCI driver is that it is also accesible and useable by the VGA
driver. This means that the DOS and VGA/X server can use the same memory area.

UMBPCI V1.00 Beta1 support for XENIX and some DOS 6.0 and higher versions for CPC and
80286 emulated and NDS 1.x and some 2.x emulated for PC DOS 6.0 and higher and PC DOS 7.x
(PC DOS 6.1 and higher for DOS 7.x support). Also support for some HP-UX 9.x as well as
some and all Motorola MOdelsystems and UMSDOS and DR-DOS and NDS.
Check the sources for the latest, or make sure your COMMAND.COM supports memory areas by
setting MEMAPP to 0xFx or 0xFy, setting FLE (Flash LUN Enable) to 0x01 or 0x02 and also
setting the MEMTYPE and MEMTYPECHG macros in COMMAND.COM.
Most drivers do NOT support memory areas for DOS/V for some reason. If a driver does
NOT support memory areas for DOS/V or a user encounters problems setting

UMBPCI is a UMA access driver for MS-DOS (5.00 and above) that works in « mode 0 » (Intel chipsets) or « mode 4 » (other chipsets). Here’s what it DOES:
1.) It pops your BIOS and provides BIOS-level UMA support for MS-DOS/DOS based systems.
2.) It loads directly from disk into your DOS memory area.
UMBPCI may be able to expand your DOS memory beyond 1MB, but this is untested.
UMBPCI is NOT a Novell/DR-DOS UMA access driver for MS-DOS. UMBPCI, like most UMA access drivers, requires a BIOS interrupt in order to work properly. This is because the BIOS is the only machine code program that runs in the DOS memory area.
UMBPCI has been tested on Intel, FIC VIA (Apollo), ALi (Aladdin), SiS and AMD cards.

UMBPCI supports all systems which have a BIOS chipset available with a PCIR or a PCI card (PCI: PCI-ID 10F1:M.N 66 PCIR: PCI-ID 0C82:1.N 66) and have Upper Memory Area (UMA) access.
Upper memory area can be used for either real memory or for graphics memory.
A memory area can be reserved for real memory on hard disks and CD-ROMs.
UMBPCI supports the following feature:
– Supress the ROM corruption on boot-ups by setting the system BIOS- parameter (BIOS Parameter #: 33, 49, 50, 51, 67, C5).
– Supress the MEGA DOS- crash on ROM corruptions by defining the BIOS- parameter #51 (MS-DOS version: 5.1, 5.5, 5.05, 5.20, 5.25, 5.30, 6.0, 6.0B1).
You can find the parameters #33 and #49 at your motherboard’s BIOS configuration menu in the Bios Parameter Tab (BIOS Parameter code: 33 and 49). The parameters #50, #51, #67 and #C5 are all over the net. (Google finds more than 350 pages). You can find them in the UMA driver’s manual.

UMB’s LFFS driver is the bios of part of a larger technology. Understanding the LFFS driver is essential to understand the UMB architecture.
UMB’s LFFS driver is coded as a software user provided driver. This means, it is compiled as software to be loaded into the kernel of the UMB BIOS and run from there. The driver is capable of running from S-BIOS or even from PCI/AGP boards. But it runs through UMB BIOS. This makes the LFFS driver a second stage driver.

This is the first driver by Erick Massin – the original (pre-M$ Money) UMBPCI version 1.0 was released in 1994 by Dave Crumly (Dave89). It will eventually support all modern hardware. I’ve enhanced the program for ease of use. It will allow you to create TDBs, Initialize, Update & Map PCI Memory, Query PIRQs, PICPs and look for holes in the PCI Memory map. It is also useful if you are having trouble with your computer’s BIOS or DOS.

I’ve been using it daily since 1999 to manage my M$ programs and maintain a good memory map with up-to-date BIOS and DOS files. It has indexed MyDOS, MyDOSlite, and MemoryMap files that are difficult to match. The product has been tested to work correctly with MyDOS, MyDOS Lite 2.1, MyDOS Lite 2.4.1, MyDOS Lite X, MyWINDOS 2.0, MyDOS 3.0, and SmallDOS 6.20. I’m sure it will work with more versions.
