Most efficient way to write to child thread from parent thread
Apologies for such an elementary question, but I am fairly new to C++.
What is the most efficient way to write to a child thread from a parent thread? Should I be calling some kind of queue for this? Is this the best way to go about it?

As the comments say, you generally should be using a synchronization mechanism on the operating system. If the operating system provides such a mechanism, then you should use it.
For example, Microsoft provides a thread synchronization mechanism as a class called CriticalSection. You can lock/unlock sections of memory when you need to modify data protected by a section of code:
CriticalSection cs;
//…
cs.EnterCriticalSection();
//…
cs.LeaveCriticalSection();
The typical way to communicate between threads is to post a message to a queue, and some thread periodically receives that message and reads from it. If the messages can be associated with a particular thread, this can have the advantage of allowing the reader to handle the message specifically.
