Understanding Photoshop
You may have heard Photoshop described as being composed of seven layers — color, black and white, luminance, hue, saturation, value, and transparency. Although not true, each layer serves a particular function in the editing process and you can use as many as you need, including as few as one. By understanding how Photoshop works, you can leverage the program’s power to be more creative.
Layers
Before you can get to work, you need to have layers. Layers are invisible pieces of the finished image. You add them to your image by moving them around on your canvas. Many people associate Photoshop layers with editing, but in fact, you can use layers for almost any purpose, including for texturing.
After you have a layer on your canvas, you can manipulate it the way you would manipulate any other layer. You can add another layer, move it around, and group it with other layers. Figure 4-1 shows the layers you create when you import a JPEG or TIFF file into Photoshop.
Note that the far left side of your canvas always has your background layer. The bottom layer is a solid black color, like Figure 4-1, and the bottom right side of the layer canvas is the background. Any layer you create is added to this layer and above it.
**Figure 4-1:** In the figure, each layer is visible in the layer dialog box. You can easily change the name of any layer, and you can move a layer to any position on your canvas.
It’s a common mistake for people to use Photoshop as though they were working with a sheet of blank paper. They place a layer at the bottom of their layers palette and work on that layer, assuming that all layers below it are visible.
If you work like this, you’ll never get around to moving the layer up to the top of the palette and filling it with content. Simply by working on a layer below the one you want to work on, you move the entire contents of

Most of the features and tools that you can find in the Photoshop suite are also available in Elements. The tools are usually distributed into four areas: (Picture Tools, Editing Tools, Photo Filters, Adjustments)
Picture Tools
In order to use the Photo tools you need to activate the PS toolbox by pressing the « Panels » icon in the top left of the window (the button looks like a light bulb). You can also access the toolbox directly by pressing the button in the top right corner of the window.
[ Advice : avoid using the top right toolbox button for accessing tools, you lose control over the current tool. The best way to access the tools is to press the key « Option » then the « C » to open the controls for the tools. ]
Once you press the option+C button, the active tool appears in the first row of the toolbox.
The PS toolbox allows you to access all of Photoshop Elements’ tools, which are divided into three main areas: Paint, Select and Tools.
To access the tools, you must first locate the tools you want to use by browsing the various tools available in the toolbox. The elements that the Paint and Select tools are arranged on a « toolbar » on the top of the window. The tools can be dragged & dropped on the canvas.
To activate a tool: (1) Click the tool on the toolbar (2) Drag the mouse on the canvas to place the tool at the active point on the image (3) Drag the mouse to move the tool (4) Click the right button to stop the tool
Use the tools available to edit the image you are working with:
Adjust the color of the image, using the color tools.
Adjust the contrast of the image, using the contrast tools.
Adjust the brightness of the image, using the brightness tools.
Create a selection of the image, using the tools of the selection tool.
Create layers, using the tools of the layers tool.
Create and move shapes, using the tools of the shapes tool.
Create and edit text, using the tools of the text tool.
Create and edit layers, using the tools of the Layers tool.

Sony has announced that the PlayStation 5 will cost $399 / €399 / £399 when it launches on 12 November, and will be available in a variety of different configurations.
