It is the practice in the trade to provide automatically operated garage door opening systems for use with vehicle garage doors. Generally such systems may be divided into two classes, namely, those which are responsive to radio control and those which are responsive to sound transmissions. In the former class of garage door operator the radio control receiver includes, at a minimum, a microprocessor for controlling a radio frequency transponder and an antenna which is located in a common housing with the transponder. In the latter class of garage door operator the transponder is generally contained in the door and the receiver is separate from the transponder and is coupled to the door at some distance from the transponder thereby insuring the receiver will be sufficiently far away from the transponder to avoid interference therebetween. In such case the antenna in the receiver is generally located in the vicinity of the garage door where the unit is more protected from the wind and weather and is less subject to interference from electrical fields created by wiring in the garage area.
The receiver in the radio control garage door opener generally includes a timer which is responsive to the presence of a vehicle in the garage and is operable to automatically open the garage door when the vehicle leaves the garage. The garage door operator may be operated to close the garage door when the vehicle returns to the garage or to remain open in the event that the vehicle leaves the garage without closing the door.
