Why M2 performs « in-memory » installs instead of an actual installation on the hard drive?
I want to build a simple project. It includes a maven dependency to a larger project, and it requires some other artifacts as well.
I’m not ready to expose a « production » (for these purposes) server just yet, but I do want to deploy the « first » version of the project on my PC (I’m using Windows), so I’m tempted to just add the dependency and run mvn install to « release » the project on my PC.
Why would I want to use the maven install goal to « release » to my PC when I know that maven already has all of the dependencies on my PC already?

At least it seems that Maven is not keen on in-memory installs. If you run Maven it would consider all the required artifacts to be already present in the local repository.
If you ran Maven with the install goal it would perform an installation of those artifacts.
So my theory would be that your in-memory Maven install is somewhat of a stub Maven install where the entire dependency tree is pulled in from the internet and cached into memory.
Therefore you should be able to do the same thing with Maven on your local PC with a dummy setup of maven and a local repository to provide it the required artifacts. If you have a good internet connection it
