History and Description
AutoCAD is a commercial CAD software application. It was developed in-house at Autodesk as a CAD application for internal use by its engineers. The first version was released in 1982, and it was named AutoCAD. The software version of AutoCAD launched for the Apple II computer family in 1982. AutoCAD became the best-selling desktop CAD software for microcomputers in 1984, in spite of a steep price tag of $2,795. In 1986, Autodesk released AutoCAD LT, a more affordable version with fewer features than the original AutoCAD.
The first version of AutoCAD was a $3,995, graphical, low-resolution version of the MITS Altair 8800 « Micro » computer, which was released in November 1982. The name of the program was a portmanteau of « Auto-cad » and » MITS-ART’s « Easy-CAD ». The software, a self-described « academic woodworker » who created it, was developed by Steve Wozniak, Steve Jobs and Ron Wayne. Steve Jobs was the only real designer at Apple II and was responsible for the shape and styling of many Apple II products, including Apple II CAD.
The Apple II version of AutoCAD was a desktop application that ran on an Apple II computer, a 12.7″ monochrome graphic display and low-resolution keyboard. By the time AutoCAD 2.0 was released, there were several other desktop applications for the Apple II such as the equally-acclaimed CadEdit and AutoCAD. AutoCAD required a higher-resolution graphics system that could render vector graphics at a higher resolution and thus AutoCAD became the first mainstream commercial CAD software to require a high-resolution display and graphics controller. AutoCAD was the first desktop CAD product to require an internal graphics adapter, a video controller, and a monitor. AutoCAD 2.5 (released in May 1984) was designed to run on the Apple IIe and Macintosh computers, and this version had a built-in color display, a feature that was almost unique to Apple at the time.
In February 1982, AutoCAD was first shipped on the new Apple Macintosh computer. The version of AutoCAD that shipped with the Apple Macintosh was version 1.00. A version 2.00 was released in June 1982. This release was for the Apple II computers.

The acquisition was completed in January 2012. As of February 2013, iCad Design was marketed as part of Autodesk’s Architecture & Interiors business unit.
On January 1, 2013, Autodesk announced that its real-time, cloud-based AutoCAD WS platform would become Autodesk Fusion 360. This platform is meant for creating and collaborating on 3D content. It has the capability to create visualizations for 3D in AutoCAD and real-time collaboration in real-time environments and it is web-enabled. Fusion 360 was designed to take Autodesk’s competencies in real-time 3D collaboration to a new level. It comes with pre-built functionality for real-time collaboration, real-time visualization, 3D publishing and streaming, real-time image transfer, video chat and augmented reality.
On April 16, 2018, Autodesk released a significant update to its 2018 release of AutoCAD WS, with new features and capabilities aimed at architectural and engineering firms.
