Year-End Review

The year ended with a lot of stories about the state of play in the Middle East, and how the war in Iraq has morphed from a positive to a negative experience for Iraqis. The new year opens with a brand new Canadian prime minister (in 2008 the country elected a minority government) and new prospects of a North American free trade deal.

Economically, the year showed mixed results, as the US logged a recession and Canada’s economic recovery appears to be faltering. With the world economy not recovering to its pre-crisis velocity, we are back to the perennial discussion about what to do next when the recovery stalls. Most economists are leaning towards stimulus spending to boost aggregate demand, but the key to the stalled recovery is finding the right mix of stimulus spending and monetary policy. This problem isn’t unique to the world’s leaders, and Canada is no exception.

Economist Paul Krugman, in his recent New York Times column titled New Hope for the World Economy, suggests the world’s leaders should revive coordination of monetary policy and government budgets, in order to remove the negative legacy of the last two decades of excessive budget deficits. The weak recovery, Krugman argues, indicates the need for policy makers to step in and bolster aggregate demand. Krugman’s prescriptions, while not exactly original, might be the first step towards global economic stability in the new year.

I would like to share an old saying with you this year: « Prevention is better than cure. »

This means you would be much better off tackling the problem now, because there will be no happy ending if you wait to fix things in the long run.

Thanksgiving should have been a time to reflect on the past year and what we have accomplished, and to ponder the future and what our goals are. Instead, it was the year-end of another round of bad news. The stock market ended a volatile and disappointing year as many investors were worried about the credit crisis.
