The following is a follow-up to my other post touching upon a comparison between Eastern and Western spirituality. In this post, I would like to touch on two of the themes mentioned in my previous post. These two themes are cessation and illumination. Though these themes are not specific to any one tradition, they are very important in the teachings of many different schools, especially tibetan buddhism, in order to further explain that my assertion was an exaggeration. I had mentioned before that revelation is a central theme in theistic and deistic spirituality. I had originally stated that Eastern spirituality ultimately ended up being enlightenment. I had stated before as well that without revelation, spiritual activity in general is meaningless. So the more I thought about all of this, the more I realized that there is another theme that has a primary place in theistic and deistic spirituality: the goal of revelation. In my own personal experience I have found that theistic and deistic traditions seem to be happy with achieving what many psychologists would call “closure.” Theistic spirituality seems to be satisfied with a blissful state of absorption and detachment, while deistic spirituality seems to be happy with knowledge of the self, but not necessarily any actual transformation. Revelation seems to be missing from theistic spirituality, while it is key component of deistic spirituality. Below I will touch upon these themes briefly and briefly explain how they are different and why.
The Cessation The first and foremost theme is the cessation of suffering. All theistic traditions have a common idea of their god as the purifier. The mythologies found in theistic spirituality go so far as saying that achieving this state of spiritual perfection requires not just participation in good acts, but a special act of self-renunciation. While my personal view on theism has not changed, this cessation of suffering has changed. I still accept the basic premise of theism that an all powerful and benevolent god exists, but I no longer think that god can be addressed as a being that can judge and objectify those who are most in need of help. And even though that may not be a very appealing option, I think theistic spirituality is good at pointing me towards the kind of enlightenment that I refer to in my post “Outer Man” as the mental transcendence known as nirvana.
