Over the last five years, the researchers have also polled about 300 college students about casual sex and analyzed factors surrounding it, including prevalence, fluidity, types of hookups, post-hookup activities, their effects on dating activities and relationships, as well as the pre-existing characteristics of the individuals participating in the study.
In short, Studd explains that casual sex may have its own health risks and benefits in a variety of different ways. « One might, for example, be engaging in it to relieve stress, for example, » he tells The Huffington Post. « If one is using it for recreational or leisurely purposes, that might be very different than if one is engaging in casual sex as a strategy to get on a date. »
While some studies have been conducted in the past regarding casual sex, Studd says that most people have a lot of misconceptions about it and the students they have spoken with have little to no knowledge on the subject. After all, the study was also conducted during November and December 2015. Meaning, students were busy transitioning in to the upcoming holiday break.
« So as one might expect, in this study we found that actually one-quarter of students said that they didn’t know exactly how many people they had had sex with, » he adds. « And that is an interesting finding because that suggests that we may need to rethink some of our messaging around casual sex. »
The study also didn’t go into how young people conceived of casual sex at all, but Studd emphasizes that there are six different types of hookups, some of which are neutral, some of which can be called very negative, and some that are actually positive. « But what is not clear at all is which of these ways of engaging in casual sex can actually lead to some serious negative consequences, and which can actually lead to positive consequences, » he says. « That is the purpose of this paper to be able to think about some of these ways of approaching a casual relationship and to be able to think about them in context of both the person
