1. Photoshop and its Uses
Photoshop, as the name implies, is basically a photo editing program with far-reaching powers. As a child, I had a dream of bringing black theater, black culture and black beauty together on stage, like Lucy and the other characters in the Broadway hit, A Raisin in the Sun. I dreamed it so much that I’d have to get up at night and write out my dreams so I could do it.
As a young adult, I realized my dream was only possible if I stopped living as a second-class citizen.
I emerged from the Civil Rights movement in the early 1970s, ready to take on anything. But who would take me on?
Black men were and still are the bulk of the prison population. A whole host of Black artists had already tried to bring all that out onstage, and they were crucified and literally had their careers killed off.
As for Broadway, of course, I was like every other Black girl in America who had a dream to sing on a Broadway stage. But where were the seats for us Black girls? (Fill me in on that, I thought.) Where were the art directors and architects who would want to mix our blood and create a tribe that would endure? To them, we were only up to be down.
The answer came when I read the book Octavian Nothingness by Marcus Wicker. I discovered that the basis for the major Negro musicals came from what he called « crossover dramas, » popular music that just happened to be black. I could then imagine a new kind of crossover musical. I could imagine creating a musical that would show Black people how to be happy, raise families, lead armies, sing, dance, paint, write plays, be cured by medical science, and much more.
How could I make this musical? I decided it was time for me to start writing. I bought a typewriter, and I started to write.
But I had a problem: I didn’t know if any white folks or critics would even buy a musical with all-black characters. I had to come up with a way to make sure that all my characters—the white and the Black characters—would be seen in the best light.
