Photoshop for Dummies
Now that you know what Photoshop is and its many uses, it’s time to take a look at what’s involved in using the program to edit and create images. Most of the Photoshop programs run on Windows, so we cover that platform only in this book. However, the basics remain the same regardless of whether you use Windows or a Macintosh, although you do have to pay close attention to minor differences that we point out.
Navigating Photoshop
The icons and menus in the Photoshop menu bar are generally the same throughout the program, so you should be able to find the menu commands you need without doing much searching. The items and settings are referred to throughout the book.
When you first use Photoshop, you start in the same directory you saved your image and open the file from the menu bar.
Here’s a short list of some of the icons you see on the menu bar:
The Auto-Align command changes the alignment of a layer, creating a grid of text in the process.
The Adjust Color option opens the Adjust Color dialog box, as shown in Figure 1-1.
The Alignment drop-down list appears when you select a layer. It includes options for changing the position and rotation of the layer, as well as the position of an object in the layer. You can also crop, sharpen, and other image editing tasks.

There are two main editions of Photoshop Elements: Photomerge (SE 9.x) and Smart Photo Selector (SE 11.x). Only Photomerge works with digital images in addition to the regular file formats. Smart Photo Selector works with both digital and RAW files.

Photomerge has a dramatic learning curve. The most important lesson to learn is how to use the Quick Actions palette to edit images without the need to do pixel-by-pixel editing.
The Quick Actions palette is a palette of up to 10 predefined editing actions that you can apply to photos or layers. This enables you to edit photos for free without the need to click on every pixel.
Photomerge also includes the new Filmstrip feature that allows you to see your images on a strip of photo paper as you edit them.
This is an invaluable feature for photographers as it allows you to edit multiple photos with a single click. The final result can be printed on photo paper that has a roll of photo film strips instead of a roll of standard 35mm film.
