Most of us have run into this many times. We share an article, photo, link, or video and suddenly others start commenting on it. We also see a lot of comments that are spammy and just plain rude. Comment Spam can ruin blogs, forums, and websites, even when the comment is well intentioned.
Comment Spam is useful when people want to share their opinion or support for a topic, but what they are actually saying is not the focus of the comment.
This is a short intro I wrote that I use to help me answer the question, “Do I want to filter out comment spam?”

Use this rule of thumb: If I read a comment and it says, “I liked your post because…” or “Wow, this is amazing, I loved it…” then there is almost no chance that the comment is spam.
Most content that I share is not meant to create interest or conversation. For example, if I share a photo of what happened at a party, then there is almost no chance that the comment “Awesome party, I loved it” or “Hey, that was awesome at your birthday party” is spam.
When I share something like, “This new commercial is so cute,” I am not trying to start a conversation. The subject of a commercial on YouTube is not interesting enough to start a conversation.
I like to encourage comments on my posts, but I do not want a constant stream of spam. So if I set up a filter to block comments that are “I liked your post because…,” then I do not have to read through a stream of these comments. I
