Python: Splitting a list of strings by a pattern
I have a list with a couple of strings that I want to split. The pattern is that there are only alphanumeric characters except for « _ » and « – » and the separator is a blank space.
If the pattern were:
[‘John_Bob’, ‘bob@email.com’, ‘John@email.com’]
I would want to get:
[‘John’, ‘Bob’]
[‘bob@email.com’, ‘John@email.com’]
The only way I’ve been able to do this so far is
list1 = [‘John_Bob’, ‘bob@email.com’, ‘John@email.com’]
pattern = re.compile(‘^[a-zA-Z0-9_.]*$’)
for l in list1:
if pattern.match(l):
name, email = list1.index(l)
print(‘%s:%s’ % (name, email))
I feel like there has to be a better way to do this.

You can use regular expressions as well and by using re.split:
import re
inputs = [‘John_Bob’, ‘bob@email.com’, ‘John@email.com’]
splitted = re.split(‘_+’, inputs)
The pattern _+ has the following meaning:
_ (single underscore): Zero or more occurrences of the preceding character
+: One or more occurrences of the preceding character
So the result will be:
[‘John’, ‘Bob’, ‘bob@email.com’, ‘John@email.com’]
Other pattern could work as well.
