Blocking access to a webservice when the user is not authenticated

I am creating a asp.net webservice which requires authentication.
I would like it so that access to the webservice is available to everybody but only for those who are logged in.
I know I can use a custom authentication mode and the Authorize attribute.
What I would like is to have the same behaviour in a single request – that is, if I have a user who is logged in, I can make a request to the service and it will always be accessible, but if I make a request without any authentication, the service will return an HTTP 401 error.
If I am logged in, I just send the request using the Service’s HttpGet method, and if I am not, I call Service.GetCustomer() and handle the error appropriately.
