Among the many tasks of a network administrator is to perform a firewall review and ensure the configuration and set of rules are in accordance and complies with the business requirements of the organization. In the eventuality that you are using Cisco ASA as the firewall for your corporation, then you can perform an audit on the rule sets and verify the configuration file using WallParse.
Before you can begin, you need to need to make sure that you have the ACL file handy, a task that you can easily complete by exporting the configuration file to a text file. Once you import the file to the application, you are ready to determine whether the security utility is operating according to best practice and that it complies with the PCI DSS 3.2 protocol.
It is important to note that the program currently works with Cisco ASA firewalls and that support outside this application is limited. For the time being, the program provides experimental support for Fortigate firewall CSV export files.
While it is true that reviewing a list represents only a portion of the security review of the company, it is recommended that you design a structured method of conducting the examination. When starting WallParse, the main window can be opened and arranged in several different configurations as shown in Figure 1.

The main window includes a first screen with options to search in the firewall rules, to create a new rule, to import the rules from a file or from the clipboard, to export a rule to a file, and to get help.
The first screen can be modified for the purpose of choosing a file that contains the rules to import. The field allows you to enter the search term in this case.
If the search is successful, and in case you are importing the rules from a text file, you can click on the Import button and select the file from the file explorer, as in the example in Figure 2.

The second screen allows you to perform a search for firewall rules and to view the details of the rules found. Figure 3 shows an example of a small section of this screen.

The second screen shows the complete details of the security rule as well as the option to export the contents of the screen to a text file.
In WallParse, a rule is represented by a data structure which includes a series of fields, as shown in the example below.

The WallParse security table contains information about the rules found in the security table of the Cisco ASA firewall. To access this information, you can browse the table or search for rules in it. Figure 5 shows an example of a list of rules.

To view the complete list of rules, you can click on the View All or go to the Summary tab.
To view the details of a specific rule, you can click on it in the table or on the details tab.
As shown in Figure 6, this page provides a view to specific detail information about the rule.

To export a rule to a text file, you can click on Export Rule to Save and enter the desired output file name.
In this way, you can easily create your own firewall report and attach it to your response to the Questionnaires of the PCI DSS.

« Separating normal function from sensitive system components is important in a secure network. Today almost all firewalls today will export the rules for their settings in order to provide a way of overriding normal settings for active rules or to re-enable a feature that has been disabled for performance or to record rules or configuration for an audit.
